Porsche 930 Turbo 5-GANG

By the late 1980s, few automobiles carried the same aura of raw performance and technical mystique as Porsche’s 911 Turbo. Known internally as the Type 930, it had transformed from a homologation project conceived in the mid-1970s into an enduring symbol of the brand’s engineering audacity. When the final iteration arrived in 1989, identifiable by its long-awaited G50/50 five-speed manual gearbox, it represented the ultimate evolution of the original Turbo before the model’s transformation into the all-new 964 platform.

Under its broad rear haunches lay the proven 3,299-cc flat-six engine, force-fed by a single KKK turbocharger to deliver 300 horsepower and 430 Nm of torque. In period tests, the car sprinted from 0–100 km/h in just over five seconds, its acceleration matched by prodigious high-speed stability. Yet what truly set the ’89 Turbo apart was its transmission: the robust Getrag G50/50 five-speed, replacing the long-serving four-speed unit that had defined the model since 1975. This final refinement allowed the Turbo to reach its full dynamic potential, more tractable at lower speeds, yet devastatingly fast on open roads.

Visually, the car remained unmistakable: its flared arches, whale-tail rear spoiler, and deep front valance combined functional aerodynamics with muscular presence. Inside, the cabin balanced pure sportiness with luxury, offering high-quality materials, climate control, leather upholstery, and the distinctive Porsche ergonomics that made every mile tactile and purposeful.
